Twitter finally gets support for new emoji and racially diverse icons
A few weeks after Apple was first to support tens of new emoji, including taco, cheese slice and rolling eyes, Twitter has quietly added support for the new emoji as well.
Today the company has rolled out support for the Unicode 8.0 emoji in its ‘Twemoji” icon set, so you can use those fancy new icons on Twitter even if people’s devices aren’t fully compatible.
On the Web, Twitter translates emoji into its own set of cartoon-like characters and icons, which is also open source for anyone to use.
The company also added support for racially diverse emoji which were made available earlier in the year.
These can be selected on your phone by tapping and holding on a person emoji if you’re running iOS 8.3 and up. Google, however, hasn’t rolled out support for racially diverse emoji on Android yet.
It’s great to see Twitter keeping up with the latest icons, so go ahead and send tacos, unicorns and other icons on Twitter!
