Ring to be the Most Futuristic Wearable Device
Wearable devices of today act as a ‘notifier’ and adds a further connection between you and your smartphone. Now, a new device called Ring not only does that, but also acts as an input device for your other devices through gesture control.
Ring is a small silver ring which is worn on the index finger. You activate it by tapping on it via your thumb, after which you draw gestures in mid-air. This data is sent to your phone and the task is completed.
The ring itself has a vibrator, plus three LEDs which are tasked with notifying you.
Ring allows you to designate different gestures for different apps. Inside those apps, interaction is done by drawing gestures for alphabets and numbers, also in mid-air. It will also facilitate in payments where you will yourself add your amount and then confirm it through Ring.
Later on, Ring is expected to have its own dedicated app store, where developers will be able to publish their apps. It connects with devices running on at least iOS 7 or Android 4.4. Support for Windows Phone is expected to be available soon as well. Bluetooth 4.0 LE is used for connection. It must be noted that the device is not water-proof.
Battery will last around 1000 gestures on a single charge, and should be chargeable up to 1000 times.
Priced at $185, it will up for sale in the market in July. The device completed its Kickstarter project in just under a week and has several working prototypes, it certainly isn’t a hoax.
It remains to be seen, though, whether the gesture recognition is really as good as being told by the makers.
