Google is Aiming For 100 Percent Green Energy By 2025
While aiming to produce clean energy is extremely commendable for companies looking out for the environment, it is by no means an easy task. For Google, an ambitious aim has been set for the firm to become a 100 percent green energy company by the year 2025. Google had announced that it will be doubling its use of renewable energy to power not only its power-hungry data centers, but that energy is also going to be used to deliver electricity to the company’s office space.
Google’s Green Energy Initiatives at Present
The tech giant has committed itself to powering its data centers by purchasing an additional 842 megawatts of clean energy. Almost 700 megawatts of that power comes from solar arrays. The firm is also planning on generating an additional 150 megawatts thanks to a wind farm that is going to be present in Sweden as well as a solar plant present all the way in Chile. After all the procedures and deals have been completed, Google is going to be consuming approximately 2 gigawatts of clean energy, and plans on consuming 3.6 gigawatts of clean energy by the year 2025.
Currently, Google’s data centers are being used to power up the company’s four core services:
- Internet search engine
- Mapping function
- Gmail
- YouTube
How Much Capital Has Google Spent on Renewable Energy
Google isn’t cash-strapped, which will most definitely allow it to get into several environment changing partnerships in the near future that encourage the use of clean energy. One primary advantage of using clean energy is that it will not have an adverse effect on the environment, which would obviously explain why the climate changes haphazardly.
According to statistical data, Google has spent a total of $2.5 billion in renewable energy in order to provide a total of 1.2 gigawatts of clean power. It has not mentioned how much more capital is going to be invested for expanding its renewable energy plans.
Michael Terrell, Google’s director of energy and infrastructure, had this to say about the process of becoming a clean energy company:
“We’re really trying to lead this transition to a cleaner energy economy. It’s transforming anyone who touches the energy space. It’s not just about data centers or tech companies.”
It is great to see that Google taking the lead in clean energy initiatives. Perhaps in the future, Google will share their expertise on the subject with others. Even Pakistan is stepping up with green energy projects currently, signifying a shift away from non-renewable power generation methods.
