Acer Reveals New TravelMate, Aspire and Chromebook Models at CES 2016
Looks like Acer also unveiled some new products for its portfolio at CES 2016. Here are some of the most notable announcements.
Acer TravelMate P648
The ultimate machine in Acer’s portfolio, aimed squarely at professionals and businessmen who want nothing but the best.
It features an exotic design with a carbon build, spill-proof keyboard and a glass lid. It’s not the lightest notebook around at 3.7 pounds and 0.83″ thick, but it certainly looks good.
It’s biggest selling point will be it’s connectivity, being one of the world’s first laptop with WiFi 802.11ad (speeds up to 4.6 Gbps), a standard that’s 10 times faster than “ac”. However, it does have a very low range relative to the standard that it replaces and is more of a complementary piece of tech at this stage.
Apart from that, you get exactly what you’ve come to expect from a high-end machine. You have a 6th-gen Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 ” m” processor, 4 GB DDR4 RAM (expandable up to 20 GB) and up to a 512 GB SSD. For even more oomph, you have an optional Nvidia GeForce 840M GPU.
Other connectivity options include USB 3.0, Ethernet and Thunderbolt 3, as well as VGA, DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI for your external setups. You have an HDR HD wide-angle camera, dual mics and speakers, along with a fingerprint reader and a Kensington lock.
Battery is said to last 8 hours of usage. Prices start at $799.99 once the TravelMate hits this April.
Acer Aspire 12S
The Acer Aspire Switch 12 S is one of the more peculiar machines in this portfolio. Originally a “five-in-one”, the Switch 12 S now has “only” four modes, laptop, tablet, tent and display.
You have a 12.5″ display at the front with 1080p resolution, however, with the option of 4K at your disposal too. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
Under the hood, you get a 6th generation Intel Core M processor, with 4 or 8 GB RAM and 128 or 256 GB SSD. There is also a rear Intel RealSense camera.
Connectivity includes USB type-C, Thunderbolt 3, microHDMI out and microSD card reader. Acer is also putting more effort marketing the new Snap Hive Gold connector, which uses a latch-less docking mechanism. The Windows 10 running machine will be offered starting this February for $999.
Acer Chromebook 11
Unarguably the lowest-end machine in Acer’s lineup is the 11″ Chromebook 11. The $180 laptop has a ruggedized design that’s tested to take a 2ft drop and live to tell the story.
The 11.6″ matte display comes with 1366 x 768 resolution and a design that weighs 2.4 pounds and is 18.6 mm thick. The lid itself can take 133 pounds of impact.
Underneath, you got a Celeron processor with 2/4 GB RAM and 16/32 GB eMMC storage. Connectivity includes USB 3.0 and type-C, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, HDMI and SD card reader.
The battery is said to last 9 hours of usage. Prices start at $180 while the availability from later this month.
