Twitter Gets Support for New and Diverse Emoji

Twitter, the micro-blogging social network has been updated to provide you a much more colorful experience when it comes to emoji, or emoticons as they are popularly referred to.

According to the company, it had announced that now users can make use of all-new emoji skin tones on its website. Apart from emoji, one thing that separates these emoji from the ones that we are used to seeing is that these ones are diverse ones, which include the likes of the thinking face and floating businessman.

New Emojis and their Availability on Popular Platforms

The website is not the first to adopt this approach. First Apple rolled out these new emojis for its users in October 2015 with iOS9. Android users still have to wait to get system-wide support for emojis, barring Whatsapp and a few other workarounds.

The reason behind this is this. While the emoji skin tones and other important emoji ranging from the taco and hot dog came as separate Unicode 8.0 updates for iOS users, most Android users have yet to see these. Google did update its Nexus devices with some new emoji this week with the new Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 update, but that system update won’t be coming to most Android devices, given Google’s abysmal track record in  Android OS fragmentation.

For now, these diverse emoji aren’t yet available on TweetDeck, although the company has stated that they will be coming soon.

It is possible that not all Android handsets are not going to receive the Unicode 8.0 update, meaning that they might not be able to see the different types of emoji that Nexus device owners are able to see. Regardless, it does not seem like a very big issue since we are confident that third-party app developers will be quick to jump in on this and roll out applications that feature all sorts of emoji, so stay tuned for further updates.
