The site opened the door to the sharing economy in 2008 and, while it’s not always the most popular neighbor, has been welcoming new cities ever since.
Municipalities and individuals have complained about the host of issues Airbnb listings can bring, from turning apartment buildings into de facto hotels to out-of-control orgies. It’s having better luck across the pond, where London’s Deregulation Act now allows citizens to rent their homes for 90 days out of every year without fines. To celebrate, Airbnb floated a house down the Thames and is having a contest for a one-night stay in the unique abode.
