The Android M Developer Preview is available now for Xperia handsets via Sony’s Open Device program.

Google’s next-gen mobile operating system launched last month for developers with a Nexus 5, 6, 9, or Google Nexus player. Now those with Xperia devices can give it a spin.

“With Google’s Android M Developer Preview, it’s worth noting that there are a variety of system changes and some API behavioral changes,” Sony’s Ashley Davies wrote in a blog post.

That includes the new customizable app permissions system, which lets developers create apps that ask permissions only when necessary, rather than requesting broad access at the time of download.

Sony has a full list of compatible Xperia devices, which includes the Z1, Z2, and Z3 families and the Z, Z Ultra, ZL, and Tablet Z. If your Xperia is compatible with the Open Device program, check out Sony’s guide.

Google provided a first look at the next version of Android in late May, promising “thousands” of bug fixes and small tweaks, as well as Chrome Custom Tabs, more seamless linking, and Doze, which uses motion detection to help manage power.

Chrome Custom Tabs are already available on the Chrome dev channel, and will roll out to users in the third quarter. Android M will also support USB-C, which Google launched with its new Chromebook Pixel. Android M will also incorporate Android Pay.

The OS is reportedly being referred to internally as Macadamia Nut Cookie, based on code with references to “mnc-dev.” That’s probably just a codename, however, and we’ll have to wait until this fall for the real, dessert-themed moniker.
