PTA Organizes IXP Workshop in Islamabad

Internet Exchange Point (IXP) workshop is being organized by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) at PTA headquarters from April 18th to 22nd.

The workshop is aimed at looking into the idea of setting IXP in Pakistan.

Chairman PTA, Dr. Syed Ismail, Member (Finance) PTA, Mr. Tariq Sultan, Member (Compliance & Enforcement) PTA Mr. Abdul Samad were present on the occasion. IT & telecom industry experts, representatives of telecom companies, ISPs and HEC attended the workshop.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman PTA, Dr. Syed Ismail Shah said that owing to introduction of latest technologies such as 3G /4G exponential growth has been seen in broadband users. The number of users has already crossed 30 million mark which 17% of the total population.

He said PTA has always encouraged new ideas and supported initiatives for the betterment of telecom sector. Setting up of IXP is one such new initiative which will help in improving internet access, business environmental and local content.

On this occasion, international experts of IXP from US and Australia Ms. Jane Coffin Director (Business Strategies), ISOC and Mr. Philip Smith, Consultant Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), highlighted different aspects of IXP i.e. technical perspectives, global landscape, best practices & regional perspective, legal aspects, dispute resolution and cost Issues.

It may be added that, an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a physical infrastructure through which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Contact Delivery Networks (CDNs) exchange internet traffic between their networks (autonomous systems).

The primary purpose of an IXP is to allow networks to interconnect directly, via the exchange, rather than through one or more third-party networks.
