Pebble’s Big Tease: New Smartwatch? Software Update?
In a few days, Pebble will announce … something.
The smartwatch maker’s homepagecurrently displays a pixelated watch above a countdown clock, slowly whiling away the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until something happens.
But what? We’ll just have to wait until Tuesday to find out.
Pebble did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment. And typing your email address and clicking the button labeled “Curious?” didn’t do much. “I bet you are,” the site responded. “We’ll keep you posted.”
Following a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012, the Pebble e-paper watch helped to launch a new generation of smartwatches. Almost three years later, the company is still going strong; earlier this month, Pebble shipped its 1 millionth device.
And it doesn’t intend on slowing down. In a recent interview with The Verge, CEO Eric Migicovsky teased new products and a new software platform unlike anything on the market right now.
“It doesn’t look like what we have today, and it doesn’t look like what’s on your smartphone,” Migicovsky told the tech blog.
Perhaps the company is ready to unveil its exclusive software next week, or a next-generation watch to join the family.
According to 9to5Mac, Pebble is gearing up for both.
A new, as-yet-untitled watch is expected to sport a slightly wider, color, e-paper-like display, encased in a thinner design. It will also come with a microphone, Nuance voice recognition, and an improved backlight, the blog said.
On the software side, the Pebble will run a faster Cortex M4 processor with a 6-axis gyroscope, and likely be priced in the $199 range of thePebble Steel.
