Microsoft Preparing A Lower End Surface Tablet?

If you wondered why the rumor milled slowed down for reports regarding a new Surface tablets, then wonder no more. A fairly reliable report claims that there is some action on that front.

Microsoft is actually said to be developing a lower end Surface tablet.

No, it’s not exactly a direct successor to the now discontinued Surface 2 — the Windows RT powered midrange slate bearing the Microsoft logo — in how it functions. But a successor it is. This new tablet is reportedly powered by Windows 8.1 proper.

Fully upgradeable to Windows 10 upon launch of the new operating system.

And that means no more ARM business for Microsoft, end of the line for Windows RT, if this report pans out. This new slate will likely be powered by an Intel Atom or Core M processor, opening up the possibility of running all manners of software, apps and programs.

Better yet, this low end Surface tablet will probably be announced very soon, according to the report above, with the BUILD 2015 developer conference in San Francisco a fair bet.

That event is set for April 29.

The report further claims that this new device will be marketed as non-pro hardware, leaving the possibility of aSurface 4 or Surface 4 Pro later down the year.

We’ll see how this one goes.
