Android Lollipop Crashes Less Than iOS 8

Stick a feather in your cap, Android users. The next time your friends pull out their shiny new iPhones and show off its pretty iOS platform, you can whip out a new report from Crittercism, which indicates application crashes on Android 5.0 Lollipop are a fraction of a percent lower than those on iOS 8.

According to the company’s latest data update, an average of 2.18 percent of apps crash on iOS 8. That’s a bit higher than the 2.02 percent crash rate for iOS 7, which beats the crash rates for iOS 8 and Android KitKat 4.4 and Lollipop 5.0. However, if you’re just comparing the most modern iteration of each platform’s operating system, then Android Lollipop wins the day with a crash rate of 2.15 percent—a smidge lower than iOS 8.

Focusing in on just Android for a moment, Lollipop’s crash rate even beats out its predecessor, Android KitKat, by a fairly significant amount. Among the four main versions of mobile operating systems measured, KitKat enjoyed the highest app crash rate at just around 2.76 percent.

Though Crittercism didn’t examine all major iOS versions—instead focusing on just iOS 7 and iOS 8—it did provide a quick look at app crash rates among five different iterations of Android: KitKat (4.4), Jelly Bean (4.3, 4.2, and 4.1), and Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0). As you might expect, the oldest OS version had an even higher crash rate than KitKat 4.4, but not by much.

As far as devices go, apps tended to crash more on the iPhone 4s andiPhone 6 than other Apple smartphones. That’s not to say that one is more faulty than the other, however; the popularity of the device also likely factors into account, based on how many crash reports Crittercism likely sees. Over on Android, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and S III smartphones had higher crash rates than their peers—but it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Galaxy smartphones took up three rankings in the top five, given their popularity.
